We saw this weird cloud thing over okc yesterday....it looks just like that creepy thing from the abyss. I know I have a degree in meteorology, but since air acts as a fluid, maybe some of my oceanographer friends know what the hell this is!!!!
To cut to the chase, one site describes them as...
"A “Hole Punch” cloud is a non-technical name given to a cloud formed from an aircraft dissipation hole or trail. They are also called "Punch Hole" clouds. Rather than extending as a line, Hole Punch clouds appear as a circular or oval hole in a deck or thin layer of supercooled water clouds. They are not uncommon where jet flight paths intersect altocumulus or cirrocumulus layers. What is uncommon is when they form in a perfect circle that persists for a length of time to be widely observed."
I knew you could answer that...I should've just titled the post "Kevin, look this up" :) That's pretty sweet, it did stick around for at least two hours, that last pic is over midwest city, while the first one is near downtown, so it traveled a long way for awhile. sweet!
Pretty picture. Looks like they're unofficially called "punch hole clouds". Here's a write up:
